ARLES
Arles was shot the year before this project had a name; the body already indexing a place before the practice had words for what it was doing. This was the register of ease rather than reaction: a nervous system finally allowed to rest, heat that felt held rather than punishing, days loose enough that the town stopped feeling visited and started feeling lived in. The Rencontres d'Arles ran through those weeks, a fixed point passed rather than pursued, the way the festival sat at the edge of Cagliari or the hill sat above Athens without needing to be the subject. What settles here isn't disorientation but its opposite; the particular quiet of a place that, for a while, asked nothing of the body at all.
