SOMATIC ENCOUNTERS
Somatic Encounters gathers images made in response to a place rather than in careful observation of it; shot from whatever state the body was actually in, not planned around in advance. Heat, fatigue, disorientation; the particular collapse after a heavy meal; the rare, settled ease of a nervous system finally letting go, none of these are worked around, they are the actual conditions of the work, present in the image whether or not they are visible within it. Each album, Athens, Cagliari, Arles, and those still to come, holds walks through a place, without return or revision, so that the photograph functions less as a description of where I was than as an index of what being there did to me.
