Somatic Encounters
Somatic Encounters gathers images made in reaction rather than in observation. Shot in the moment a place acted on the body, before there was time or will to compose. Heat, fatigue, tedium, disorientation: these are not obstacles worked around but the actual conditions of the work, present in the image whether or not they are visible within it. Nothing here is returned to, waited for, or resolved. Each album, Athens I, Cagliari, Arles, and those still to come, holds a single, undeliberated pass through a place, so that the photograph functions less as a description of where I was than as an index of what being there did to me.
